Current International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Arthur Abraham " King Arthur" is set to defend his title on June 27, 2009, at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany.
Coming off a 12-round unanimous decision over American Lajuan Simon, the Armenian-born German Arthur Abraham will make the 10th title defence of his IBF middleweight title which he won in 2005 when he defeated the Nigerian Kingsley Ikeke via a fifth-round KO.
Arthur Abraham, one of the best and strongest pound for pound pugilists, made history when he defended his IBF title against his first mandatory challenger in Edison Miranda of Colombia in what went down in history as one of the bloody battles in the history of pugilism. It was on September 23, 2006, in the city of Wetzlar, Germany.
In what is known as the " Bloody Battle of Wetzlar" in the history of German boxing, Arthur Abraham got caught with a powerful punch by Edison Miranda somewhere in the opening rounds of that bout, and it was obvious that Abraham had broken his jaw, because it immediately started to swell up from round five.
With a swollen broken jaw and a mouth bleeding heavily throughout the second half of that bout, Arthur Abraham fought on to win a twelfth-round unanimous decision over the dangerous Edison Miranda to retain his title.
After that bout, Arthur Abraham was immediately rushed to the hospital in Wetzlar where he underwent a successful surgery of his broken jaw.
In May of 2007, after recovering from his broken jaw surgery, Abraham made a successful comeback with a third-round KO over Canadian Sebastian Demers. In his second mandatory defence that took place in August of 2007, Abraham scored a spectacular eleventh-round KO over Khoren Gevor, the current European middleweight champion who is scheduled to fight three-time world middleweight champion Felix Sturm for Sturm’s WBA middleweight title on July 11, 2009, in Germany.
Arthur Abraham made a successful debut in the in the United States of America when, in rematch of their September 2006 bout, scored a fourth-round technical knockout over Edison Miranda in a non-title bout that took place on June 21, 2008, in Florida.
In Nov. of 2008 in Bamberg, Germany, Arthur Abraham, in his third mandatory title defence, stopped the 1992 US Olympian and former world junior middleweight champion Raul Marquez who quit on his stool in that bout after 6 rounds in a scheduled twelve-round IBF middleweight championship.
Considered to be one of the top middleweight champions today, Arthur Abraham is aiming at unifying his title with either WBO/WBC middleweight super champion Kelly Pavlik or with 3-time world middleweight champion Felix Sturm, the current WBA middleweight champion.
But first, Arthur Abraham stated at a press conference prior to his June 27th title defence that he does not take his challenger Mahir Oral lightly. Abraham’s record is 29 wins with 23 coming by way of knockout.
