A prominent abortion doctor was shot dead at a church in Wichita in his home state of Kansas. Police have a suspect in custody and laid charges on him.
Dr. George Tiller, a frequent target of anti-abortion activists, was shot dead by a gunman as he served as an usher during a morning service at his church, Reformation Lutheran Church.
His wife was nearby and escaped unhurt.
According to the police, the gunman, a white male, fled in a car but was later caught.
The 51-year-old suspect is currently facing one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault for threatening onlookers who tried to intervene.
Dr. Tiller, is one of the few doctors in the U.S., who provided late-term abortions and was vilified frequently by anti-abortionists including Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly.
A late-term abortion is the termination of a fetus beyond the 20th week of gestation, when it is potentially old enough to survive outside the womb.
Dr. Tiller’s clinic was bombed in 1985. An anti-abortion activist shot at both of his arms in 1993.
Dr Tiller's lawyer, Dan Monnat, said he was gunned down as he served as an usher during a morning service.
The anti-abortion organization Operation Rescue has condemned this shooting.
"We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller's family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."
