The WBA heavyweight championship bout scheduled for May 30, 2009, in Helsinki between the Uzbekistan WBA heavyweight “champion in recess” Ruslan Chagaev and the Russian WBA heavyweight champion Nicolay Valuev has been called off.
Reportedly, Ruslan Chagaev failed to fulfil the Finnish boxing federation’s medical requirements before his rematch with Nicolay Valuev, which forced the cancellation of the bout by the promoter of the event.
For this, boxing promoter Don King, one of Valuev's handlers, has asked the World Boxing Association to declare Nicolai Valuev its undisputed heavyweight champion.
According to Ruslan Chagaev,s management, Ruslan Chagaev is in good shape and ready to fight and the German Boxing Federation, the doctor representing the Austrian Boxing Federation have all classified Chagaev as safe.
Sources say that the World Boxing Association has not been yet officially informed of the reported medical unfitness of WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev by the Finish Boxing Federation.
"I would have loved to make this fight but given those circumstances it is not possible.'' Stated Nicolay Valuev .
