A second case of its type in a year in Dubai, Sally Antia, originally from Hale, Merseyside had been living in the UAE for 12 years. Married and a mother of two, she was arrested for charges of adultery.
Sally Antia, a British expatriate who had been living in the United Arab Emirates for 12 years with her husband and two daughters was arrested at a posh hotel on May 2 in Dubai on charges of adultery, which is punishable by deportation and one year in jail in the Emirates.
Mrs. Antia, 43 appeared in court on Sunday with her boyfriend who pleaded not guilty. She admitted the charges and told the police that she had paid for her boyfriend’s flight from Britain to Dubai with whom she then spent six days until May 2 in the Radisson Dubai Deira Creek hotel, reports The Sun.
Apparently, her husband, Vincent Antia reported her affair to the authorities. According to Mrs. Antia, the allegation was made out of revenge after she ended the marriage because of his infidelity.
A source told the newspaper “She is mortified. Her husband has wrought the ultimate revenge. She is trying to come to terms with the fact her life and career could lie in tatters.
“No one here believes she would be able to cope with prison.
“She has two children and she’s desperately worried about what will happen to them.”
Amnesty International has launched a campaign against the adultery laws in the UAE, taking up the case of Marnie Pearce who was also jailed earlier this year after being accused of having an affair with her neighbour. She also lost the custody of her sons to her Egyptian husband, reports The Telegraph.
Tim Hancock, Amnesty’s UK campaigns director said, “Sally Antia should not be sent to prison. The sex lives of consenting adults simply shouldn’t be a criminal matter. She should be released, immediately and unconditionally.”
Also, ‘Friends Reunited’, a networking site of which Mrs. Antia is a member of read her last entry, “Living in Dubai for the last 12 years. Married with 2 girls now aged 11 and 13.
