Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese democracy leader has today appeared in court. She said she did not go against the terms of the house arrest after an American man went to her home.
The Burmese democracy leader said she did not know at first that the man had been at her home but was told about it later by an assistant.
In a scarce turn,diplomats and a few Burmese journalists were given permission to be there at the trial.
It is thought that Aung San Suu Kyi will be found guilty of the charges at the trial which is facing much criticism and if convicted she could face five years in jail.
The trial had begun over a week ago and today was the first chance that she had to give evidence in her case.
She faced the charges after an American man, John Yettaw, spent the night at her house where she has been under house arrest for the last nineteen years.
She is said to have looked frail and faced around thirty minutes of questioning by the court.
Speaking to the court she said:
"I didn't know about [the visit] immediately. I was informed about it at 0500. My assistant told me that a man had arrived,"
She said she did not say anything about the visit because she did not want to get security or the visitor in any trouble.
Speaking to journalists she said;
"Thank you for your concern and support. It is always good to see people from the outside world,"
It is thought it will be a quick trial and it has been said that the verdict might have already been decided.
