The Flip UltraHD is now available in Canada, giving Canadians another YouTube-friendly camcorder from the makers of the Mino. The pocket camcorders have evolved from Pure Digital's debut, the disposable digital camera.
Available in the U.S. since April, the Flip UltraHD is touching down in Canada today. The successor to the Flip Ultra camcorder, this unit shoots in 720p high-def video and still offers the same user-friendly design and simplicity.
Last year, Pure Digital Technologies, the maker of Flip camcorders, gave us the Mino and MinoHD, their first leap into high-def. Now the UltraHD follows on the paths of its predecessor by allowing users to one-touch record video, and upload to YouTube easily. The new model offers a full two hours of recording capacity, and a bright two-inch LCD screen (compared to the first-generation Ultra's 1.5-inch screen).
The unit is also very light. In a quick test by DigitalJournal.com, we found the unit to be lighter than our individual cellphones.
Also worth noting is the set of AA-size rechargeable batteries you can charge in the unit by simply connecting the camcorder to the USB port on your PC. Alternatively, you can swap in a pair of standard AA batteries if you don't have time to charge.
The UltraHD will cost $250 CAN. In the US, it's priced at $200 US.
Pure Digital has been winning attention for the Flip models, praised by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh. But before they created camcorders, Pure Digital debuted its disposable camera at CVS drugstores. It then launched the first disposable video camera, retailing for $25.
The Flip Ultra arrived with much fanfare, and Pure Digital Technologies then created the Mino unit and the MinoHD models.
Recently, Cisco completed the acquisition of Pure Digital Technologies. The Pure Digital team becomes part of Cisco's Consumer Business Group which includes Linksys, Cisco’s home networking, audio and media storage products.
