Legendary Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Iran's shopping list and what was discovered in New York. Iran has more technology knowledge than previously thought.
In a testimony that was largely ignored by the press, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the United States has thoroughly underestimated Iran's abilities to produce long-range nuclear missiles - and that the U.S. has been operating from a time-line that Iranian technological advancements have significantly truncated.
According to a staff report for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee - which is chaired by Democrat John Kerry, Iran "could produce enough weapons-grade material for a bomb within six months."
"The Iranians are deadly serious about proceeding with this program," Morgenthau testified, according to a Washington Times editorial. "It is later than a lot of people think."
Morgenthau has seen the threat first hand, having disrupted a plot by a Chinese company to move Iranian material purchases through New York banks. For more on this story, please see this link.
Citing Mr. Morgenthau's testimony, his discovery amounted to "Iran's shopping list for materials related to weapons of mass destruction." The depth of these materials are "literally thousands of records."
Given the mistakes made in Iraq over the weapons of mass destruction claim, Mr. Morgenthau was quick to add that "we have consulted with top experts in the field from MIT and from private industry and from the CIA...Frankly, some of the people we've consulted are shocked by the sophistication of the equipment they're buying."
