The pageantry and those difficult questions on world peace, the environment and gay marriage. A mountain of controversy has fallen upon the runner-up for Miss USA but will her actions in hypocrisy lose her the California crown?
Following the damning question regarding homosexual marriage and her jump to support ultra-conservative and religious
groups such as the
National Organization for Marriage, it is no secret that hardline Republicans are backing the 21-year-old's right to free speech. News media have claimed contact and
support by Sarah Palin herself and an advertisement campaign featuring Miss Prejean that uses the terms "bigot" and "liars" in an effort to show supporters of gay marriage in a bad light supported the side association.
The
ad campaign called "No Offense" is believed to replace an
older advertisement called "Gathering Storm" that alludes to gays who wish to marriage as simply not satisfied, even using the words "have not been content" in reference to same sex couples living together.
On the N.O.M. website,
comments calling for amendments because of gay marriage being "in our face everyday" firmly substantiating the issue. And in reality, groups supporting a cause have a right to voice their opinion.
But did Carrie Prejean's
nipple shot photos, taken at the age of 20-years-old, the ones that she denied, make her a hypocrite?
Whatever it does, it gave cause for
Miss California pageant officials to "circumvent" Prejean's crown and according to the
Los Angeles Times:
appoint first runner-up Tami Farrell as "our official Beauty of California ambassador.
Donald Trump, who gave Miss USA's 2006 winner, Tara Conner, a
second chance in light of her cocaine problem. He saved her crown and she entered rehab. He
announced that he will make a decision whether or not to have the same compassion for Prejean. However, Prejean lied about her photos and continued to deny them, allegedly the pageant disqualifies.
Prejean has rebutted the photos as being taken when she was 17 and only one was taken. Pageant rules require one to reveal if they have done nude, topless or semi-nude photos prior to entering the contest.
With the runner-up assuming the role of appearances for Miss California, co-executive director of the pageant described the recent events symbolically as a "runaway train" full of "helpless passengers." A ride that he says "ends today."
On NBC's
Today Show, the young woman ready to step up to the plate, Tami Farrell,
spoke today about the situation. She stated that she couldn't judge Prejean's dilemma but did say that her not being up front with the association and denying the photos that continue to surface as well as continuous campaigning for associations who are not affiliated with the Miss Universe Organization could be creating the crown-holder's strife. Farrell also explained that media focus on the controversial question of gay marriage would make it seem that if Prejean loses her crown, it would appear due to that. However, she gave a simple assessment of the process, saying that if it were a winner who was not asked that particular question however, but continued to not show up for her duties and have lied about pictures surfacing, then a similar decision regarding the crown would still be there (see
interview here).
Pageant officials cannot fire Prejean as the representative of the state. That is the job of Donald Trump and the Miss Universe Organization.
With a hard religious stance that bluntly and harshly opposes gay marriage, would she have received a different type of support from the religious groups had she been pro-gay marriage had these
racy photos surfaced? That is the hypocritical question of the day.
