The Pentagon is reporting the number of rape cases is up compared to last year's data, but the details needed for prosecution in a large percentage of those cases didn't pass muster.
According to the Pentagon the number of reported assaults of military personnel increased 9% compared to the year before.
Kaye Whitley, director of the Pentagon's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, said, " Most victims are women, most cases involve young people and alcohol is often involved."
In Afghanistan and Iraq the number of rape cases increased from 131 to 165.
California U.S. Congresswoman Jane Hartman said, "While the report shows modest improvement, we're far from Mission Accomplished. Military women are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq."
Of the 2,923 cases reported 643 refused to provide all the information needed to seek litigation.
