The Forbes list of Safest Cars of 2009 tells you which cars meet most safety demands, based on various catogeries, does you car make the cut?
In the Forbes report:
To determine the Safest cars of 2009, Forbes used crash-test and rollover data from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Each vehicle on the list received the highest possible overall scores from IIHS( IIHS crash ratings are more severe than federal standards), and at least four out of five stars from NHTSA.
Points were awarded based those scores and itemized crash test scores that evaluated head,chest, leg and pelvis injuries to crash dummies, as well as the effectiveness of torso restraints and the safety cage. Bonus points were awarded for those cars that rated high in Consumer Reports recommendations.
1. Acura Mdx : ( Midsize SUV)
MSRP: $40,990
"The MDX scored especially well in front-offset tests, with perfect scores across the board for its safety cage, restraints, and head/neck, chest and leg/foot injury measures. It offers side airbags, a rollover sensor, electronic stability control and daytime running lights, among other safety features."
2.Acura RL (Large Car)

"The RL scored especially well in rear-crash protection, with perfect scores across the board for its dynamic and seat/head restraint results. It offers side airbags, electronic stability control and daytime running lights, among other safety features."
3. Acura TL (Midsize Car)

The TL scored especially well in front-offset tests, with perfect scores across the board for its safety cage, restraints, and head/neck, chest and leg/foot injury measures. It offers side airbags, electronic stability control and daytime running lights, among other safety features.
4. Honda Accord (Midsize Car)

6.Honda Odyssey (Minivan)

"The Odyssey scored especially well in rear-crash protection, with perfect scores across the board for its dynamic and seat/head restraint results. It offers side curtain airbags, a rollover sensor, electronic stability control and antilock brakes."
7.Honda Pilot (Midsize SUV)

The Pilot scored exceptionally well in side-crash protection, with perfect scores across the board for head protection, structure, and head/neck, torso and pelvis/leg injuries. It offers side airbags, a rollover sensor, electronic stability control and daytime running lights, among other safety features.

Acura and Honda featured prominently on the list, scoring almost 5 cars each. "It's a credit to Honda's market-savvy decision to focus on safety," says Doug Scott, a senior vice president for GfK Automotive, a market-research and consulting firm.
"Over the past several years, Honda has joined Volvo and Subaru as a safety-oriented brand, he says. Better yet for Honda, safety is selling well in today's depressed auto market.
"Safety is trumping lower price these days, believe it or not," Scott says."
