The teen who committed suicide in the bathroom of Canandaigua Academy on Tuesday, has been identified as Thomas Kane. As the investigation continues, conflicting images are being painted about this bright honor roll student.
Canandaigua, N.Y. - Although we may never really know why Thomas Kane brought the sawed-off shotgun, 30 rounds of ammunition and two Molotov cocktails to school, there have been some eerie pieces of information that has come to light. These bits and pieces of information create conflicting images of who Thomas Kane was.
Kanes parents say he was funny, easily liked and had good grades. Now, they are grieving for a son that had planned on going to college.
School officials say that Kane had recently completed 4-months of in-school suspension for allegedly being caught smoking pot before school.
Friends of Kane told police that Thomas felt that the punishment was too severe and he had talked openly about "wanting revenge". After confiscating Kane's computer, police found evidence that Kane had visited "Columbine-type" Web sites. Drawings found at the Kane home done by Thomas, were described as "dark and disturbing."
Of the recovery of the computer and drawings, Canandaigua's Chief of Police, Jonathan Welch said that although the police are still reviewing everything, "It’s a two-pronged theory to find out what triggered this event, so hopefully we can prevent it in the future. But also, that extra layer of protection to ensure that no other students were speaking with him and had the same motive." At this time, police do not believe that any other students were involved.
After seeing the surveillance video, it was determined by police that Kane brought the ammunition and explosive devices to school in a duffel bag that he had placed in his locker. However, the shotgun was brought in later after Kane retrieved it from his car, wrapped in a pair of blue jeans. He went directly to the bathroom where he committed suicide.
Because the community does want answers, police are trying to create a time line of events so that maybe other lives can be saved.
School Resumed Wednesday
School was back in session Wednesday after a two hour delay. A moment of silence was held in memory of Kane.
Although counselors were there to help students cope, many parents did not send their children, too many "what ifs" on their minds.
One parent, Susan Stettzenmeyer said, "This could've been prevented. How did he get all this in the school without anyone knowing anything? The amount of things that were found in that locker scares me."
