Girl, 10, burned using a sun bed

By Jane Fazackarley     May 1, 2009 in Health
Kelly Thompson, a 10-year-old from Swansea, Wales has been left with 70 per cent burns after she spent 16 minutes under a sunbed.
The sun bed was at a salon which was unsupervised. If people want to use them they just need to put the money in for access. The 10-year-old had to stay in hospital for the night and received care from staff at a burns unit. Her mother is calling for someone to look into how this occurred.
The tanning centre will now be meeting with the local council soon to discuss the situation with local health officials.
Her mother is calling for the salon to be closed down. Kelly had been given the money to go to a nearby fair with a cousin but after finding it closed they went to the salon.
Kelly paid £8 to use the unsupervised for 16 minutes and she was underage for using the salon. It's reported that staff were not there to keep an eye on this but a sign on the door did make it clear that it was not open to anyone under the age of sixteen.
The Health and Safety Executive have given updated advice and say these salons should be supervised at all times and anyone under eighteen should not use them.
Giles Denham, speaking for the HSE,had this to say: "We understand that some people may want to use sun beds. Our guidance is designed to ensure they have the information to minimise the associated risks.
"That's why we recommend that owners ensure their salons are staffed all the time, even if they are coin-operated, and that UV tanning equipment is not used by people under 18."
Sharon Hannaford, her mother, said: "When they got there the funfair was closed so they went into town and decided to use the tanning centre. Kelly put £8 into the machine which gave her 16 minutes on the sun bed.
"She was under-age but there was no staff there to stop her from using it. And there was no-one to give advice on using these potentially dangerous machines."
