article imageA scantily-clad Angela Merkel in German advertising campaign

The beautiful Angela can be seen adorning the walls of Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm wearing mauve underwear in an advertising hoarding of 200 m² in the company of other leading German politicians posing as boxers.
But this is not a Political ad by her party, the CDU, destined to garner votes for German legislative elections to be held in six months time. It is in fact an ad by a leading German lingerie manufacturer which shows her and the others in a well-photo-shopped mock pose.
She actually looks, well, quite tanned. (Click on ‘Agrandir’ to enlarge.)
The ad also proposes to offer 5€ to anyone bringing them old underwear, in imitation of the Government’s successful “Scrap-your-old-car compensation” policy, designed to boost sales of new cars. The policy offers 2,500 € to anyone who will commit to giving up their older cars.
The lingerie ad’s captions claim that the company is “doing our best to uphold (sic) demand”, saying that “The country needs new underwear.”
Bebe, a passer-by, commented that “I think it’s cool to be able to look at something funny whilst waiting at the bus stop.”
Since becoming a well-known political figure Angela Merkel has been regularly criticised and made fun of for her outdated clothes and hairstyle. She says herself that she is not particularly interested in fashion and that she has only recently discovered the joys of make-up or dressing for special occasions.
In a famous incident last year, she turned up with a deeply plunging neckline at the Oslo Opera. That appearance led to a flood of criticism and irony, even in otherwise serious-minded newspapers.
