Moorpark High Students Retain Academic Decathlon Title

By Sandy Sand     Apr 26, 2009 in World
It’s not all fun, games and surfing for many young people in Southern California. Some students actually buckle down, crack the books and spend hundreds of hours preparing to compete in the U.S. Academic Decathlon.
For the second year straight, all that effort paid off for students at Moorpark High School in Moorpark, California, who participated in the contest.
Moorpark scored 51,289.5 points out of a possible 60,000 in the national finals held in Memphis, Tennessee, last week.
In a written statement, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said:
"Moorpark High School's decathlon team winning this prestigious honor is fantastic news, and I congratulate these bright students for a job well done.”
Moorpark’s win makes this the 16th national title won by California schools since 1982, and the seventh consecutive win.
Scholastic teams from 36 states and London, England participated.
