Bombardier just won the contract for 204 new streetcars in Toronto. The Bombardier contract is the largest municipal procurement in Canadian municipal history.
The contract is worth a total of $1.22 billion for the new low-floor light rail vehicles. The new streetcars will begin to be delivered in 2011.
The new models will be air conditioned and able to carry twice as many people.
The contract bids were between Bombardier and Siemens Canada Limited. Both companies met all commercial and technical requirements. The award to Bombardier came down to price.
The arrival of the streetcars in 2011 depends on if the order is placed by next week.
The funding for the new streetcars has yet to come from either Ontario or Ottawa. Chief general manager Gary Webster said this morning the TTC has until June 27 to secure funding and place the order.
