article imageOp-Ed: Miss California Denied USA Crown because of Gay Marriage Answer

By Steve Bellah     Apr 22, 2009 in Entertainment
Congratulations to Miss California, Carrie Prejean, for her honest answer to Perez Hilton's agenda-driven question about her opinion on gay marriage during Sunday's Miss USA competition. She dared to voice traditional values and it cost her the crown.
I usually avoid watching Miss USA, Miss America, etc., like the plague precisely because of such agendized questions as the one Perez Hilton lobbed at Miss California. However, I happened to be in the room where my wife was watching when I heard the question being asked. I immediately thought to myself, here comes another politically correct, pop culture, cookie cutter response. I was pleasantly surprised by her answer and impressed that she had the guts to give it given the location of the venue and the originator of the question. Upon hearing the answer, I told my wife that she would not win the crown, even though her answer was quite good. Turns out I was right.
By simply stating her opinion, she has become the target of vile and hateful verbal attacks from the very crowd that continually cries out for tolerance and understanding. Well...tolerance and understanding for everything except traditional mainstream values.
As reported on Fox News, when asked whether she believed in gay marriage she said "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
According to Mail Online, Mr. Hilton, the self proclaimed queen of all media, was visibly unimpressed with her response and referred to her as a "dumb bitch" on his blog. He added that he would have stormed the stage and tore her crown off her head had she actually won.
The head of the Miss USA pageant said "As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," "I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family."
The comments also sparked a hissy-fit in the lobby where a gay man attending with his partner said "It's ugly," "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."
On the flip side, Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico is quoted as saying "In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!"
Prejean told reporters that she is getting a lot of encouragement...'Lots of phone calls. I've gotten over 500 facebook friend requests, hundreds of messages from people I don’t know, saying how proud of me they are that I stood my ground. 'That made me the real winner"
Good for her!!
