article imageOp-Ed: Why Do Celebrity Divorces Make News?

By Carol Forsloff     Apr 22, 2009 in Lifestyle
Mel Gibson's wife filed for divorce. Madonna and Guy Ritchie finalized theirs. The reasons given are irreconcilable differences. Why is this news? Are they different? Actually they reflect ourselves.
Twenty-eight years of marriage up in smoke with a Gibson divorce. That's a lot of years under the bridge. In the meantime Mel Gibson has made a bundle, and there was no pre-nuptial agreement between Gibson and his wife Robyn. So there is already speculation about how much she'll get or how much he'll retain, again depending upon the version of the account one reads. They have had seven children during the marriage, only one under age 18. They cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the difference and declare that they will continue their past behavior and keep their business private about this. That's likely not going to happen, it appears, given the fact that the news has been front page today and likely to continue because of the high-profile nature of Gibson and his film-making career.
Gibson has been full of statements about himself and the status of others, including minorities so much so that he has been quoted by magazines and newspapers for years. He is considered, for sure, a good-looking hunk and a superb actor by many people, but what he has said hasn't endeared him to certain religious, political and social groups. He has said he is bipolar, admitted to drinking too much, and has had to apologize for making anti-Semitic remarks. Wonder about Gibson and his wife of 28 years and what she had to say all about some of his remarks that have been controversial at times. The proverbial fly on the wall, one might want to be in matters such as these.
As for Madonna, she has been in the news for many years as well, doing things that kept her there, from musical videos that were considered over-the-top sexually and her romances with different leading men. Her marriage to Sean Penn years ago drew headlines, just like the ones she got during her divorce from Guy Ritchie. Guy Ritichie was said to be a down-home kind of fellow who took his girl home to his mother right after they met for a home-cooked meal. Madonna was used to bigger things, perhaps. They were married nine years and had one son together.
These are the principal reasons often cited for divorce, some of which, given Gibson's very political discussions on matters of social problems and politics, that may give insight into the couple's own problems. They also hint at the problems that may have occurred between Madonna and Guy Ritchie:
• Lack of commitment to the marriage
• Lack of communication between spouses
• Infidelity
• Abandonment
• Alcohol Addiction
• Substance Abuse
• Physical Abuse
• Sexual Abuse
• Emotional Abuse
• Inability to manage or resolve conflict
• Personality Differences or ‘irreconcilable differences’
• Differences in personal and career goals
• Financial problems
• Different expectations about household tasks
• Different expectations about having or rearing children
• Interference from parents or in-laws
• Lack of maturity
• Intellectual Incompatibility
• Sexual Incompatibility
• Insistence of sticking to traditional roles and not allowing room for personal growth
• Falling out of love
• Religious conversion or religious beliefs
• Cultural and lifestyle differences
• Inability to deal with each other’s petty idiosyncrasies
• Mental Instability or Mental Illness
• Criminal behavior and incarceration for crime
I count a possible ten from the list for Gibson and a bunch for Madonna as well, but other readers may have better ideas. But the fact is that the Gibsons, Madonna and Ritchie like other people probably have more than one reason for deciding to split. That is similar to the rest of us and likely gives us either ammunition or a sense of tranquility that we don’t have these problems, given the public clamor for information.
