YouTube added a new category called “Shows”, where users can watch popular television shows and movies thanks to a partnership with Crackle, CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz and others.
In addition to the millions of user-generated videos on YouTube, video fans can now also watch hundreds of TV shows and movies.
When you visit YouTube.com, you will see a new “Shows” tab. This section of the site includes TV shows like Harper's Island, The Addams Family, Happy Tree Friends, Married with Children, Life of Birds, Star Trek: The Original Series, Mythbusters, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Tudors and others.
To see movies, click the “Shows” tab or click the link here. You will see movies like Carrie, Cliffhanger, Kiss the Bride, Little Princess, and many more. There are even some Indian movies.
TV shows and movies will have ads built-in to them similar to videos on Hulu.com. Google is offering Google TV Ads, where companies can create ads that will appear in TV shows and movies on YouTube.
Most probably, Google will share the advertising revenue with the content provider.
The videos cannot be embedded on other sites, so users have to watch them on YouTube's website.
In its blog, YouTube said TV shows and movies are available only for U.S. viewers for now, but they do plan to expand to other regions.
