The U.S. Navy rescued the captain of the cargo vessel from his captors, the Somali pirates. In a daring operation they freed the captain and killed three pirates and captured one.
Captain Richard Phillips was held hostage on a lifeboat by four Somali pirates since last Wednesday. The Somalis captured him in a failed attempt to seize the main ship, Maersk Alabama.
The US navy sent three warships to rescue the captain. Navy officials were in negotiation with Somali pirates through the Somali elders, but the talks failed because the officials wanted to arrest the pirates.
After the talks failed the operation began and was able to rescue Captain Phillips safely.
Three Somali pirates were killed in the operation and the fourth was injured and was taken into custody.
Captain Phillips was taken aboard the USS Bainbridge and is in good health.
