Method to Cool Earth’s Rapid Warming is For Emergency Use Only

By Sandy Sand     Apr 9, 2009 in Environment
There was an old margarine commercial that always ended with a warning tag line: It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.
Fooling Mom Nature is just what the newly appointed science advisor to the White House is recommending...
But, only in the event of an emergency.
In his first interview since being appointed a month ago, John Holdren told the Associate Press this is something we might have to resort to, because:
…global warming is happening so rapidly. “It's got to be looked at," he said. "We don't have the luxury ... of ruling any approach off the table."
The idea is an old one, controversial, and offered as an emergency option by a Nobel Prize-winning scientist. It includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays.
Twice in a half-hour interview, Holdren compared global warming to being "in a car with bad brakes driving toward a cliff in the fog."
Holdren, along with many experts believe that a rise in global temperature of a few degrees would lead to disastrous conditions, such as severe coastal flooding, changes in weather patterns and droughts.
