According to U S defense officials, the crew has seized back control of the merchant ship that was captured by Somalian pirates today.
The U.S.-flagged ship, the Maersk Alabama was attacked off the Horn of Africa today. The ship had 20 Americans on board..The ship was carrying containers of food and relief material bound for Mombassa. This was the first pirate attack on American citizens in recent years.
U.S. officials confirmed the retake of the ship by its crew. According to them, the crew had taken one of the four hijackers into custody, three other pirates were thrown overboard. A pentagon official said:
Multiple reliable sources are now reporting that the Maersk Alabama is now under control of the U.S. crew. The crew reportedly has one pirate in custody. The status of others is unclear, they are believed to be in the water.
However, John Reinhart, the CEO of Maersk which owned the vessel didn't confirm the retake of the ship.He said:
Speculation is a dangerous thing when you’re in a fluid environment. I will not confirm that the crew has overtaken this ship.
He said the company was trying to contact the family members of the crew of the ship.
