Owing to the abuse of cellphones by employees, the provincial government of NWFP in India has imposed a ban on the use of cellphones by teachers and nurses in public during work hours.
The abuse of cell phones is becoming a nuisance throughout the country, especially in big cities like Peshawar. Not only do the educational institutes keep ringing with tunes and chats over cell phones by the students (and the general public) but government offices, schools, and hospitals are victims of cell pone abuse by employees and the public at large. To control the situation, at least partly, the provincial government of NWFP has imposed a ban on the use of cell phones by teachers and nurses during duty hours in government schools and hospitals.
The ban was declared by the NWFP health and education departments on Monday, April 06, 2009, through notifications issued to government schools and hospitals across the province. According to the government officials, the ban was the result of several complaints made against teaching and nursing staff for using cell phones during duty hours while not performing their work efficiently. This has been affecting services and the overall performance of these government institutions. The notifications specify that those violating the rule banning cell phones in office hours will be terminated from tier job.

The use of cell phones during driving has already been banned in Punjab, where the traffic police reported a high incidence of accidents due to cell phone use while driving vehicles. Many people have criticized this ban as they think that cell phones are needed during travel to communicate about important matters, like emergencies.
