Cosmetic companies, such as Suncoat and ToeShades, are offering toxin-free, water-based nail polish. Not only is this nail polish safer to use, but it doesn't smell or turn your nails yellow.
Conventional nail polish contains high amounts of chemical solvents such as toluene, amyl, and butyl; when these chemicals are released into the air they give off a chemical-like smell. This is why you can always smell a nail salon before you see one. Both Suncoat and ToeShades are water-based polishes; meaning the chemicals have been replaced with water. Therefore, you won't have the "nail polish" smell or yellow nails after repeated use. Chemicals in nail polish have been linked to cancer studies because of the deadly chemical, phthalate, which seeps into your blood stream by the pores in your nails. Phthalate has been researched and linked to cases involving birth defects and interfering with hormone balances. Granted, heavy amounts of phthalate would have to be in your system for cancer to appear; but with the new, natural nail polishes you do not have to worry about exposing your body to such dangerous chemicals. Suncoat and ToeShades are also free of formaldehyde, which is used in conventional nail polish to preserve the formulation. Also, without these chemicals present in the all-natural nail polishes, Suncoat and ToeShades, do not present a safety hazard as flammable and explosive. Suncoat can be removed with an all-natural nail polish remover also available for purchase on their website and ToeShades can simply be removed by peeling away the nail polish like a band-aid.
