article imageHybrid Taxis Gain Popularity

By ashley.woods4     Apr 6, 2009 in Environment
There are nearly 200,000 taxis in North America, all of which are driven an average of ten times more than a regular passenger car. Therefore, introducing hybrid taxis will not only save the average cab driver gas money, but will clean up the environment.
However, the transition from regular taxis to hybrid taxis has not been smooth; even though the benefits seem promising. The average "cabbie will save more than $1,000 per month on gas in a hybrid." This seems that the taxi business could become more profitable especially when cars are getting well over 30 mpg in town.
The most popular hybrid vehicle now used by taxi services is the Ford Escape Hybrid which gets 36 mpg in town and runs entirely off a battery while going under 25 mph. This is great news for big cities like New York, Chicago, and Seattle; which is where many of the hybrid taxis are popping up.
The benefits are endless with hybrid taxis especially when it comes to going green and cutting back on our vehicle emissions and creating a better fuel economy. The transition has not been smooth for taxi companies to switch to hybrids for various factors, such as demand and upfront costs. It does not currently cost more to ride in a hybrid taxi; so the next time you need a ride, request a hybrid as a favor to the taxi company and to the earth.
