article imageRichard Dawkins says Pope is 'stupid, ignorant or dim'

By Chris V. Thangham     Apr 2, 2009 in World
Professor Richard Dawkins has come down hard on the Pope, calling him stupid and ignorant for comments he made about condoms not being the solution to AIDS in Africa.
During his recent visit to Africa, the Pope told reporters that AIDS "cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms: on the contrary, they increase it."
Professor Richard Dawkins, a prominent biologist and atheist, criticized the Pope for this comment. He said the Pope would have blood on his hands if his beliefs are followed by the Catholics around the African continent.
He told an audience at University of Valencia in Spain:
"I wonder on what basis anyone can say condoms make AIDS worse. The Pope is either stupid, ignorant or dim. If people take his words seriously he will be responsible for the deaths of thousands, perhaps millions of people."
Dawkins wants people to think for themselves on the subject. He added that people who do that are less likely to believe in God.
Dawkins was given an honorary degree at the Spanish university.
The Pope's comments led to worldwide criticism from health experts, politicians and health activists.
Lancet, the medical journal wrote an editorial this week and called on the Pope to retract his comments, which they said, will be “devastating for the health of millions of people."
