article imageConfickr Update: Protect Your Computer Now

By Carol Forsloff     Mar 31, 2009 in Internet
April 1 is the day technicians believe the virus/worm Confickr is scheduled to activate. It may not, since it is set up to be a surprise. No one knows what will happen, but this an update for protection for that extra security recommended
Technicians say do the following:
1.Update your Windows operating system to make sure it is completely patched as well as antivirus software updated.
2.Try booting into Safe Mode, if possible.
3.Try Microsoft web-based scanner, Symantec's Confickr tool , Trend Micro's Cleanup Engine or Malwarebyes. If Confickr prevents doing this, go to a non-infected computer to do it.
4.Make a full back up today.
Technicians say what won't work is simply turning off your computer and unplugging it tonight. If the malware is already on your machine it will become activated once the machine is rebooted. Changing the computer date won't help.
Complete instructions are here.
Macs will be fine and will escape the virus. Wish I had one tonight.
