On Monday, March 23, 2009, Willie Gary visited the TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network) studios in South Florida. He shared his passion for education and religion to the Christian network.
Willie Gary started from humble beginnings, yet, he surmounted those obstacles to become one of the most influential and successful attorneys in the country. His law firm consists of 30 lawyers and is located in South Florida. His largest case was half a billion, and looking at his past this is truly an amazing story of hope. It was great to see a successful person in business, and in law attribute all their great fortune to their relationship with God.
Usually, people claim their victories to their hard work. In this recession, it is refreshing to see someone make progress when coming from little resources. He was unable to afford a
$10 application fee to Shaw University. Years later, Mr. Gary gave the school over $10 million to thank the institution for taking a chance on him without the required money. It represented the money that was waived plus a million for each dollar. I believe Christians can learn from Mr. Gary sharing his personal story. Anyone who believes in Christ is called to spread the Gospel in whatever way they can, and it appears that Mr. Gary is a positive example. Additionally, giving back when able is a fundamental part of being an active Christian.
There are other people that have success testimonies, and there should be more outlets to share on a global platform. Perhaps, people should start sharing their "good news" on forums. Not everyone can share their personal triumphs on TBN. Therefore, people like Willie Gary can serve to inspire people that are struggling in this volatile economy on a large scale via TV.
Watching the show live was a nice experience for me as a young entrepreneur. He gave tips regarding business that anyone can benefit from hearing. For example, he was willing to work harder than the next person. He continued to explain that he was willing to work 24 hours on a case, if necessary to achieve victory in the courtroom. When putting in the work, it ensured he never came in second place.
Another side note I thought was interesting was his ability to have lavish things, but remain grounded enough to rent a Chevy. Willie Gary was not unapproachable, and did not flaunt his wealth. When I shook his hand as he was leaving, he proudly walked over to his rented Chevy and drove himself. Most people with a net worth of about $60 million, don't tend remain as grounded.
In summary, I believe that meeting Mr. Gary was a nice experience. His testimony on TBN should inspire young people and others with a dream to elevate themselves through education. His $10.1 million dollar donation to Shaw University that gave him a chance attests to the fact that investing in youth is worth it.
Every institution should look at his story as a reason to accept students that have the work ethic and a giving attitude. The repayment can be 10 fold or more. The current recession does not have to stop progress, people have been through hard times before and achieved.
