According to her father, Roxana Saberi's mental health is failing and he fears she is suicidal now. Should Roxana perish in Evin prison, the worst culprits in her death will not be the Iranians. That is who they are. It will be our government and press.
The Roxana Saberi Hostage Crisis, Day Nineteen and Counting. For however long she remains alive, that is.
The latest on that sad story, from HuffPo via Reuters:
The father of a Iranian-American journalist imprisoned in Iran said on Tuesday that his daughter had become suicidal and threatened to mount a hunger strike as her confinement drags on.
Reza Saberi told Reuters he spoke to 31-year-old freelance journalist Roxana Saberi by telephone early Tuesday morning.
"I am very worried. She is pretty suicidal," said the elder Saberi, who lives in Fargo, North Dakota. "She is saying she will go on a hunger strike if they keep her there. I tried to calm her down. I told her we are doing everything and to just hold on. Don't give in. We will try to secure her release."
Roxana Saberi has been jailed since January 31 and was being held at Tehran's Evin prison.
Saberi said his daughter told him she had met with a prosecutor in Tehran and been told she may be in prison for several months and possibly up to two years.
You got all that? Another Carter-like endless hostage crisis? If Roxana lives that long, of course.
THIS JUST IN: 'Iran Mulls Death Penalty for Offensive Bloggers'
A new Al Jazeera English video reports that Iran is considering a law that would make "offensive" blogging punishable by death. The video notes an Amnesty International report claiming that 90 percent of all state-sanctioned execution in 2008 occurred in Iran, China or Saudi Arabia.
Considering they've already murdered one young Iranian blogger for insulting Supreme Asswipe Ali Khamenei, it looks like that policy is already in effect. Also, considering this innocent young Iranian died in Evin prison, I can only wonder if Roxana Saberi heard his tortured screams before his suicide.
Should American citizen Roxana Saberi die in Iranian custody, the Islamist extremists would be primarily to blame, no doubt for their relentless psychological torture of Roxana in Evin. But I expect that from the genocide-threatening, Jew-killing, gay-exterminating, women-stoning, child-executing, kid martyr-training, hostage-taking, dissent-crushing, Nazi propaganda-spewing and blogger-killing Mad Mullahs of Iran.
They kill dozens every day. Even our soldiers in Iraq today. And every day. It's all SOP for today's Third Reich. Just as it was for the original. But unlike the original, today's Hitlerite Islamist extremist regime in Iran has been raining Hell on their own people, us, and all across this earth for thirty long hellish years.
Yet that is who they are, as Hitler and his bloodthirsty Gestapo and SS killing squads were. Can't blame a tiger for drinking blood and devouring human flesh. You can only kill it. But it is the village leaders who allow that tiger to feed on its own, without lifting a finger, that are also complicit in the deaths of the innocent, for they did nothing to stop it when they could have done something. Anything.
First, let's exonerate the Good Guys. The freeroxana.com website, which has been working tirelessly on behalf of Roxana. Many kudos also to Roxana's true BFFs, NPR, ABC, the BBC and the CPJ for their 10,000+ signature petition and strong words. The Guardian/UK, which I have slammed on many occasions for its rose-colored reality-denying perceptions of the world, is now fully on the Free Roxana Bandwagon.
Tally Ho, Mates!
Also, Iranian.com is a GREAT place for insights into today's Iran, by Iranians themselves. They not only support Roxana in full measure, but are attempting to inform President Obama, as I have, that there are two Irans today: the freedom-loving Iranian people, and the freedom-crushing Islamist regime.
This was also true of Nazi Germany.
I must now even commend the Huffington Post, yet another naively idealistic outfit I have tangled with in the past. Yet their coverage of Iran is some of the best around. I have linked to their great articles many times. As a Bonus Prize, even some of the idealistic pundits at HuffPo are finally waking up to who it is we're actually dealing with in Iran. Let me also give a high-five to the North Dakota Legislature for speaking with one voice for Roxana Saberi. 1 down, 56 to go. Lots of Good Guys to go around on this score.
Now, let us move on to the Guilty Parties, whom history will damn for their silent complicity should Roxana die in Iranian captivity. The Buck Stops at the White House with President Carter. I mean Obama. You cannot find ONE mention of Roxana Saberi on the White House main page. Not one! Although President Obama is open for questions online now. His chief concern? The economy. Personally, I don't care if the economy tanks even worse. I do care greatly, however, about an American citizen undergoing unimaginable psychological torment as we speak. Feel free to contact President Carter on this matter. I mean Obama.
Goddamn, I miss Ronald Reagan.
Second, SOS Hillary Clinton. When she first demanded Roxana's release on March 5th, now twenty days ago, and the Iranians promised the very next day she would be released soon, I thought it was a done deal. What man wouldn't fear Hillary? I would! Yet it would seem Iran's Islamist leaders holds the same contempt for Hillary as they do all women, and would much rather be beating or stoning her than taking her crap.
Yet Hillary and State have been notably silent since March 5th. And no trace of Roxana Saberi on either State's main or Iran pages, even though Roxana should be State's top priority given the circumstances.
You CAN, however, text Madame Secretary online or at 90822 today and tomorrow. At the moment, Madame Secretary is too busy blaming US for Mexican drug cartel violence. Why not the cartels?
That does not bode well.
To show that I have no partisan ax to grind, I now condemn the entire US Congress lock, stock and barrel. No mention of Roxana Saberi on their main page. No resolution in support of Roxana, like North Dakota's. None forthcoming either, it seems. Busy, I guess. I see they have their priorities straight.
As to the Invisible Press, who else has been reporting on the horrors of Evin prison as I have here at DJ? Considering the adverse effects of Roxana's unlawful confinement in that medieval torture chamber are literally killing her, why no news of it? Hmm. Curious. The BusHitler-fighting Champions of Freedom and Justice at Daily KOS also have nothing to say about Roxana Saberi. Screw 'em!
Should Roxana perish in Iran, and I most sincerely hope with all my heart that scenario does NOT occur, her blood will be on the hands of those who watched in silent complicity as a heinous crime took place and did nothing to stop it, as surely as it will be on the hands of the Islamist Gestapo goons who tormented her beyond human endurance. Though it will never happen, as justice is rare and fleeting in this sick world of ours, I will conduct my own Nuremberg-like Trials of them all, here at DJ and elsewhere.
And I will make it my mission in life to remind the American people, and opposition candidates, of just how badly they all failed us, Roxana Saberi and her family in particular, come election time. All of them!
Revolting!!
In the meantime, I would MUCH rather do all I can to save Roxana's life and mental health. Wouldn't you?
While you're at it, you might want ask the aforementioned about THIS railroaded Iranian-American woman.
Lastly, you may not know this, but how we deal with Iran vis-a-vis Roxana Saberi will set the tone of Iranian-American relations, and with each passing day the Mad Mullahs only laugh louder at us. Cats on a string. They held America hostage thirty years ago, and they're doing it again today. Tell me they're not.
Here's the White House. Here's the State Department. Here's Congress.
Feel free to thank and rally even further NPR, ABC, the BBC and the CPJ.
As I feel free to thank you all immensely now, Dear Readers, for once again topping Google in a Roxana Saberi Hostage Crisis category! Lil' 'Ol Me here at DJ! I'd normally be quite pleased, but my Google-headlining a major news issue like this is actually pretty sad, when you think about it.
Speaking of which, the Invisible Press: the New York Times, CNN, FOX, NBC, CBS, and AP.
Given the gravity of the situation, shouldn't this be a 24-hour news coverage item now? You tell me!
Lastly, not for me, but for Roxana, ALWAYS for Roxana, please email this update and contact info far and wide. Pirate what you will. This is not journalism. It is a PSA.
FREE ROXANA SABERI! NOW! LIKE RIGHT NOW! GET HER HOME AND OUT OF HELL!!!
