Funes Goes From CNN Reporter to El Salvador President-elect

By Sandy Sand     Mar 16, 2009 in Politics
Salvadorans elected Mauricio Funes to be their next president. Funes had represented the left wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, and was a reporter for CNN's Spanish-language channel.
ABC news reported:
During his victory speech Sunday, Funes took a page from President Obama's book urging unity and reconciliation between the FMLN and the right-wing ARENA party which has ruled the nation for the past two decades.
Funes said he hopes to create jobs for Salvadoran immigrants returning from the United States where jobs have dried up, and he plans to continue the close relationship his country has with Washington, D.C.
He added that he wants to invest more in farming to:
…reduce his nations dependence on imported food.
