article imageLondon taxi driver drugged and raped female passengers

By Andy Madden     Mar 15, 2009 in Crime
A London taxi driver is to receive a substantial prison sentence having been found guilty of 19 charges including rape, sexual assault and administering a substance with intent.
John Worboys, 51, of Rotherhithe, South London, described by The Evening Standard as a former porn star and stripper, would cruise around London’s West end looking for victims carrying a “rape kit” which consisted of champagne, vodka, glasses, drugs, condoms, plastic gloves, a sex toy and bag of cash.
Worboys, who became known as “the black cab rapist” would show his victims (which included a lawyer, hedge fund administrator, journalist, student, advertising director, and an office worker) a bundle of cash and tell them he was celebrating a big win.
He would then offer them champagne which he had crushed sedative pills into and climb into the back of his taxi with them.
The cabbie’s first known victim was in 2002, his last was just five hours before he was caught. Police know of 85 victims but the BBC claims that he could be responsible for more than 200 assaults.
Detectives believe that many women were too embarrassed to make a complaint and many simply could not remember if they had been assaulted.
Croydon Crown Court heard how Worboys raped one woman and used a sex toy to assault another. When he was finished he would drive them home to be discovered unconscious by their partners.
In July 2007 Worboys was arrested after drugging and sexually assaulting a 19-year-old student he picked up in Covent Garden. Despite damming evidence he denied the charge and the police did not proceed with the case. His victim on that day told how she was given champagne and a vodka shot she said:
I can't remember anything from that point onwards and that's what is so worrying. I believe he got into the front of the cab and did drive me back then straight away.
The driver, who passed all the checks to become a registered driver, then went on to attack 30 more women before being arrested on 15 february 2008.
When officers raided his home they found the “rape kit” and a vibrator covered in a victim’s DNA. He was also identified by victims at an identity parade.
Outside the court, Detective Inspector Dave Reid paid tribute to the women who gave evidence. He said: “We will visit him again, for the benefit of those women who don't know what happened to them.”
The BBC said that Det Insp Reid praised the courage of the 14 women who appeared in court the police officer said: "There may be some women who have had experience of Mr Worboys who have not yet reported that matter to the police. I would ask any women who have anything to report to us that they do so."
Trial judge Mr Justice Penry-Davey adjourned sentencing until 21 April for reports but told Worboys to expect a "very substantial term of imprisonment.”
