Hatton could fill in stadiums with more than 40,000 fans and can make thousands of his supporters fly across the Atlantic to watch him fight. But in his upcoming fight against Pacquiao, he will be seeing and hearing a lot about the Pacfan phenomenon.
A week before the UK Press conference started, Hatton was on a Caribbean Holiday where he was served by a Filipino waiter, who turned out to be a Pacfan. The waiter commented that he will not stand a chance against Pacquiao, Hatton reported in one of the free London newspaper.
Two days before the British tour started, Hatton mentioned to the media how he would like Pacquiao to meet the British fans to experience what he is up against. Manny was indeed surprise with the large turnout of his fellow countrymen. Although it is Hatton's place, I think Manchester is now ‘Mannychester," Pacquiao joked at the Manchester press conference. "This is my first time in England. I am very surprised and overwhelmed by the turnout of all of the Filipino people. I would like to thank everyone for turning out. I am amazed by the support I have been shown. I did not expect it in Manchester because this is Ricky's home town, where I know he is loved. I appreciate my supporters coming to see me. I was surprised to see so many of my people in Manchester. I think Ricky Hatton was surprised to see them too."
At the Imperial War Museum in London, a large contingent of Pacfans and Hatton supporters also turned up to welcome and support their boxing idol. Pacquiao and Hatton were in high spirits as they the show mutual respect with each other.
Looking at the UK media tour, Ricky Hatton's loyal army of followers may have met their match. Freddie Roach invited all fans of Ricky to come to Las Vegas and sing their chants and songs. “My fans would be there too and would be just as loud” Pacquiao told the media in London.
