Today Michelle Obama was on CNN talking with Oprah Winfrey about her early experiences in the White House. Oprah had been an early supporter. This was a time for the two women to talk about what life has been like since Michelle Obama became First Lady.
In this interview this wasn't for Oprah's television show so there wasn't the staging or the type of cameras ordinarily used.
The First Lady told Oprah that the first weekend after the inauguration was almost like a huge, complicated wedding with many guests and visitors who didn't leave for several days. That was tiring and different.
Now, Michelle explained, " it is just us." She declared "it's our home now." Then she went on to discuss how they were redecorating to fit their own tastes, which is dominated by comfort. The Obama family wants to bring in new American artists. It's important, Michelle said, to have the White House reflect what they believe, that it is the people's house. Even the swing set represents that because when people come to visit and have children, those children have a place to play.
As for friends, there are no issues in their being able to determine what is going on with the Obamas. Michelle explained that's because their friends can read about them in their daily newspapers.
Michelle offered the following anecdote. When Barack was arriving at the White House by helicopter, Michelle asked her children if they wanted to watch. They both said no and responded that they had already seen it.
Apparently, the children are taking their new lives in stride and Daddy is just Daddy when he gets home.
