A substitute school bus driver was badly beaten by a 16-year-old boy. He repeatedly punched her in the face and head after he verbally threatened her and she pulled over. The attack was caught on tape.
Kalamazoo, Michigan--Charges have been brought against a 16-year-old boy boy who badly beat the Kalamazoo Public Schools bus driver.
The teen is charged as a juvenile with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, according to Kalamazoo County Assistant Prosecutor Karen Hayter. The boy whose name is not released is a resident of Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home. He is to appear April 3 for a pretrial hearing in the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Family Division.
The facility is to educate students with emotional or behavioral problems.
The bus driver whose name has not been released was treated at a local hospital for a broken finger and bruising, cuts and scrapes to her face and head according to Kalamazoo Township Police Chief Tim Bourgeois. He said the woman was released from the hospital Tuesday night after the attack.
The police believe the boy was upset with the driver for making a stop where there weren't any students. When he started verbally threatening her she pulled over to the side of the road. As she tried to call for help he went to the front of the bus and attacked her.

looked into the boy's record. They found that the boy has been charged with five assaults since 2005. Several of the victims were teachers or workers at the boy's school.
Twice other students came to her aid before he stopped the attack and left the bus. He was later picked up by the police at his home.
A statement was
issued by the Kalamazoo Public Schools that stated the bus driver "a veteran driver and one chosen specifically to take substitute routes because of her ability and training. The driver was conducting her duties in accordance with all rules and requirements when this incident occurred."
