The Brazilian girl, 9, was reportedly
found to be pregnant with twins after being taken to hospital suffering stomach pain, the news websites G1, pe360graus and the Diario de Pernambuco has reported. Identity of the girl was not disclosed because she is a minor. A medical and psychological team in the Maternal-Child Institude in the northern city of Recife, close to Alagoinha in Pernambuco state, Brazil, took care of the girl, the report added.
Dr Jose Severiano Cavalcanti, who confirmed her pregnancy, told the Diario de Pernambuco:
"We don't know if she will develop the pregnancy up to the end because of the structure of her body. It is a big risk for her. She doesn't have a pelvis able to support a gestation of twins.”
In Brazil, abortion is illegal except in cases of pregnancy due to rape or if pregnancy puts a mother's life at risk.
Police reportedly believe that the 23-year-old stepfather of the girl has been abusing her since she was six and he used to pay 1 Brazilian real (about 0.42 USD) for each sexual act. This man also allegedly sexually abused his 14-year-old physically handicapped daughter.
Police arrested this man on Thursday and kept in protective custody as he was reportedly trying to escape to another region in Brazil.
