Although vowing not to toss tea in Santa Monica Bay to prove they are as eco-friendly as anyone, California Republicans are throwing their own version of the Boston Tea Party today at the Santa Monica Pier.
Dubbing it the “Los Angeles Tea Party” and part of the “Nationwide Chicago Tea Party,” Republican organizers, including actress Victoria Jackson, will gather along the Pacific shore to make their displeasure over hikes in local, state and federal taxes known to lawmakers.
Jackson, backed up by Ashley Ingram, a Republican activist and one of the event's organizers explained:
What can be done (is) to get our voices heard that we're displeased with the budget, stimulus package and extra taxes we're going to bear because of the new budget.
At the event they will be urging all members of congress to ``repeal all your irresponsible spending bills,'' followed by this dire threat, or:
We will retire you at the ballot box in 2010.
The event, organized by Top Conservatives on Twitter’s Web site, comes a week after Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation that is estimated to increase taxes in the state by $12.8 billion, including increases in the state's income tax.
When signing the bill, Schwarzenegger said the tax increases were necessary to eliminate the state’s projected $40 billion budgetary shortfall.
The protest will include the federal proposal to increase taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year to provide for increased health care coverage.
We've had it with irresponsible politicians using us as an ATM, Ingram said. Just like the average family, it's time for them to live within a reasonable budget.
