Wife punished by Indian panchayat for alleged infidelity

By Subhabrata Das     Feb 28, 2009 in Crime
In a barbaric incident, a woman was reportedly stripped and tied to a tree and beaten up for two hours as per the punishment ruled by local panchayat in India on the words of the suspecting husband.
This incident took place on Thursday, in Ajmer district of Rajasthan in India, when a man named Mithu reportedly approached the local panchayat (a village council in India) of Bhambi community of Dalits in Moyada village, and lodged a complaint against his wife that she was involved in an extra-marital affair.
The report said, panchayat did not waste much time in taking action and recorded the statements of Mithu and the other members of his family and quickly ordered the “punishment” for the wife.
The wife, Seeta, who was summoned by the panchayat on Thursday night itself, said to police: “I tried to run away and hide in a hut. But they came there and tied me to a neem tree.” She cried for help but did not get any response from the spectators.
One eyewitness, whose name was withheld, said: "She was harassed and humiliated for about two hours and people were splitting on her face and beating her with sticks. Even women punched her on her stomach and abused her for illicit relations with others.''
After the punishment Seeta was sent to her father’s house in a neighboring village and told her not to return to her husband’s home.
Masuda police station's house officer Narrate Singh said: "A woman came to us late in the night. She was injured. We registered a case immediately. The matter is serious and we are trying to arrest those involved.”
