By Samantha A. Torrence     Feb 27, 2009 in World
Chiquita Banana has been named the plaintiff in the wrongful death lawsuit introduced by Columbia. Chaquita has gone on record admitting to payoffs of FARC and AUC groups for "protection."
A West Palm Beach Florida judge is hearing a motion filed by Chiquita Banana to dismiss six wrongful death lawsuits. The lawsuits state that Chiquita is guilty by proxy of the deaths of thousands by the hands of the FARC and AUC paramilitary groups, both listed by the United States as terrorist organizations. Chiquita has admitted in the past to paying the groups "protection" money to keep workers in Columbia safe. A company boat was also allegedly used in gun smuggling for one of the groups. Chiquita, however, claims ignorance in the case.
The lawsuit seeks billions of dollars in damages on top of a $25 million fine already paid by Chiquita. Chiquita says it is not responsible for the deaths caused by the waring groups.
