article imageHappy Birthday Auden, Silverberg, Men Born February 21

By Carol Forsloff     Feb 21, 2009 in Lifestyle
Groups like to celebrate birthdays for their members. Work in an office, and your colleagues will celebrate. Turn “a certain age” and friends and relatives will too. Today is someone’s birthday somewhere, that should be acknowledged.
Today in history there are two people I know who share a birthday. Readers likely know someone as well. The ones I know, not personally but through their works, are W.H. Auden and David Silverberg. I belong to a writing group and news posting site called Digital Journal, and just like other groups we acknowledge birthdays of our colleagues or significant persons. In that respect, the group is like any other. We bond over birthdays, which is part of cultural tradition throughout our lives.
It’s reasonable, given talk about astrological signs that one might wonder what Auden and David could have in common. It’s a way of looking at personalities to understand them better. Believers in star signs say that patterns are shared by people born on the same day. The heavens tell the story. One may or may not believe in astrology, but we recognize it as a topic of conversation on both the steak and chittlin’ circuit. So let’s look at the characteristics of folks born today, based upon both known and unknown features.
These are the positive and negative characteristics of those born under the Pisces or Fish sign, according to one source:
Positive:
Imaginative and sensitive
Compassionate and kind
Selfless and unworldly
Intuitive and sympathetic
On the dark side:
Escapist and idealistic
Secretive and vague
Weak-willed and easily led
W. H. Auden, born in and raised in England and educated at Oxford, was one of the major figures of literature of the 20th century. He wrote a range of poetry in everyday language for the most part on a variety of subjects from politics to psychology to Christianity. He was also a leader in literary, left wing groups and was outspoken about his ideas. He received the National Medal for Literature in 1967.
David Silverberg is the Managing Editor of DigitalJournal.com and the Associate Producer of Digital Journal TV. According to the biographical sketch he wrote of himself for Digital Journal he has a journalism degree and works as the Artistic Director and Founder of Toronto Poetry Slam. In addition he edits a spoken word anthology Mic Check. His experience spans a number of publications both in the United States and Canada.
Two writers in David and Auden, but then might that not be possible if the starry skies say so. Here’s the prediction for Silverberg today and Auden somewhere in the heavens and anyone else whose birthday is February 21: It’s the weekend and although you may still need to keep your finger on the pulse where work matters are concerned, do leave some room to indulge in some good ole fashioned fun.
