Adolf Hitler had very bad table manners. This has come to light in a document from 1945 about the Nazi leader up for auction in Shropshire in the United Kingdom in March.
British media reported the find on Wednesday.
Hitler used to bite his nails during dinner, ate very quickly and mechanically and did not engage in conversation.
The text, recorded by an anonymous German informer, mentions the fact that “his table manners are almost shocking.” The document is stamped ‘destroy within 48 hours after reading.’
The find was made in a house in the United Kingdom. Presumably, the document was kept safe by a British soldier.
It also reads that Hitler would rather eat steamed vegetables and fruit than meat and that he preferred herbal tea to coffee. He had a habit of eating enormous amounts of cake. Smoking was not permitted in his presence.
The German informer, who dined with Hitler on thirty occasions, also wrote about what Hitler said. Apparently, he had not married because he did not want a family to interfere with his work as a statesman.
Hitler saw himself as being married to the German nation. According to the informer his relationship with Eva Braun would have been platonic. The author of the document does away with rumours that Hitler would have been homosexual.
The document confirms that Hitler was hot-headed. He once had an argument with a major who had omitted to pass on a message. Hitler ranted: “If you say a word in your defense I will have you shot.” In the end the major was demoted to the status of private.
The auctioneers expect that the item will sell for an amount between 600 and 1100 US dollars.
