The top two North American prospects in this year's draft will face off tonight in a battle between OHL powerhouses the Brampton Battalion and the London Knights
A bevy of potential hockey greatness will be on display in Brampton, Ontario tonight as two top OHL teams square off in a sold out game at the Powerade Centre. Receiving top billing for this matchup is junior superstar John Tavares, who is all but assured to go number one in this year's NHL entry draft. Many would remember Tavares from his standout performance at the 2009 World Junior Championships, in which he was named tournament MVP. Tavares currently leads the OHL in scoring with 84 points in 46 games.
Joining him on the London Knight attack will be Nazem Kadri, who is the eighth ranked prospect going into the draft according to International Scouting Services. Kadri is 14th in the league in scoring with 66 points in 46 games, and was the Knights' top player before Tavares arrived via trade from Oshawa in early January.
Not to be outdone, the Battalion have some of their own star power. Cody Hodgson, a Vancouver Canucks prospect and also a star of the 2009 World Junior team, has been lighting up the OHL this season. He sits ninth in the league in total scoring with 68 points in 41 games, and many expect him to make an immediate impact in the NHL next year.
However, it is second year centre Matt Duchene of the Battalion who will really be turning heads. Duchene is having a breakout season, scoring 70 points in 47 games played. However, his +30 rating suggests he is not just a scorer, but an excellent defensive player as well. He is currently the second highest rated North American prospect behind John Taveres, and could go as high as third overall in this year's draft.
The London Knights and Brampton Battalion are third and fourth overall in the OHL respectively, which should make for a very tough test for each team. The Knights, despite having recently added John Tavares, have actually struggled a little recently, going 5-4-1 in their last ten games. The Battalion, meanwhile, are 8-2 over the same stretch, and have just recently seen a 12 game winning streak come to an end.
