Former undisputed Cruiserweight Champion Davis Haye is willing to pull out all the stops to secure a fight with WBO and IBF Heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko.
Whether you love or hate David Haye, you’ve got to admire the man’s tenacity and self-belief. It’s refreshing to hear a sportsman tell it how it is, alongside his willingness to take on all comers and initiate the most difficult routes to success time after time.
Englishman Haye has been pursuing the Klitschko brothers well before his most recent soiree into the Heavyweight division, which resulted in the impressive 5th round stoppage of Monte ‘Two Gunz’ Barrett at the O2 Arena in London last November.
The Haye-Klitschko bout was originally planned for June 20 at Stamford Bridge football stadium in London, but talks broke down and now Haye is willing to concede home field advantage by rescheduling the fight in Germany.
Haye’s trainer and manager Adam Booth was quoted as saying, “David will fight Wladimir anywhere they choose, and give them the two rematch options they have requested.”
Haye recently angered the Klitschko brothers by appearing in a UK publication in a mock-up photograph holding the decapitated head of Wladimir. Big brother Vitali was clearly upset with Haye’s antics and feels he overstepped the mark, “It is difficult to describe my feelings at this moment. There is David Haye on the photo laughing with the head of my brother.”
Most boxing experts believe Wladimir will easily triumph over the former Cruiserweight, with his superior size and experience. But Haye brings an unpredictable element to the ring with immense power and an underrated technique which could pose certain problems for the champ.
There is much speculation regarding David’s supposedly suspect chin, and this is not just my opinion, these are the Londoner’s very own words. But Wladimir hardily possess a cast iron chin of his own and has previously been knocked out three times in his career. And who knows what can happen when two big men are swinging bombs at each other. One thing is for sure; Haye will pressure Klitschko in a way most of his recent opponents have failed to do. This will, of course offer Wladimir many opportunities to take out the Englishman early doors.
It has also been suggested that Haye shouldn’t be able to simply walk into the Heavyweight division and demand a title opportunity after only defeating a shot Monte Barrett. But you have to remember, Haye was the undisputed Cruiserweight champ, and in any other division he would be able to move up and immediately fight for a title, so I think his request is quite valid.
Predictions aside, the fight would be the most intriguing thing to happen in the disappointing Heavyweight division for quite some time. Haye’s good looks, Adonis-like physique, charisma and his exciting yet unpredictable boxing style might very well make him a superstar stateside. But first he must overcome the odds and deliver a shock result by defeating the firm favorite Wladimir Klitschko.
