In fiction and folklore, garlic has long been a useful deterrent against the undead. But now researchers believe it's also good for your skin as well as your heart.
Over the counter garlic supplements have been selling well in pharmacies in recent years as they're known to help combat high blood pressure as well as reduce cholesterol. But now it seems the smelly vegetable may also help reduce the risk of skin cancer, at least according to researchers based at the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in India.
Apparently, ingesting garlic has been found "to delay the formation and reduce the size of tumours in the skin". The vegetable contains natural compounds that help block the presence of a cancer causing substance naturally present in the human body.
Dr Serene Foster, a noted herbalist, says:
"This latest research demonstrates that the health benefits of garlic are not limited to just heart health. Finding a quality supplement, with a high allicin content is vital if you are going to experience the full health benefit. Look for standardised products that deliver consistent, quality extracts in levels that really work."
Skin cancer, of which 85 per cent of cases are caused by too much exposure to sunlight, is the second most common form of cancer in people aged 15 to 39, according to Cancer Research UK.
