Cheating young girls through false promise of “good marriage” and later selling them to South Korean aged men has become a regular crime in Nepal. According to a news report
, a number of dishonest marriage agencies are flourishing in this country who mainly are responsible for running this “cheating” business.
Dawa Sherpa, a 22-year-old girl from Nuwakot district, West of Kathmandu, said she was quite happy to get married to a 33-year-old handsome South Korean man. But, after reaching South Korea, she discovered that her actual husband was a mentally disturbed old man. This sad story of Dawa Sherpa is published in a fortnightly magazine, “Himal Khabarpatrika.”
According to the magazine, this marriage was arranged by a Kathmandu based agency, last year, who charged huge money from girl’s family for this marriage. After “seeing” the “real husband,” Dawa decided to reject the marriage. Then she got married to the son of that old man.
Another girl, Shanti Magar, 21, from Baglung district in western Nepal, got married to a 35-year-old Korean man after paying one million rupees to the broker. But, after reaching South Korea she discovered that she has been handed over to a 56-year-old man.
Unmarried young Nepali women are getting cheated in this way on a regular basis. Innocent girls are paying thousands of rupees in the hope of living a comfortable life in an advanced country like South Korea, only to face their shattered destiny.
Unfortunately, this crime has already been flourished in other countries like Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Poor girls from these countries are also married to the Korean men in the same manner and led miserable life. The women married to old aged Koreans had to do all household works, besides satisfying their sexual needs.
