By Richard van der Draay     Feb 9, 2009 in Business
It was reported that a street artist Shepard Fairey, who rose to fame due to his ‘Hope’ posters of President Barack Obama has been arrested. He was arrested before for drawing on private property and buildings without permission.
Police said that he had been charged with applying graffiti to property.
The artist, Shepard Fairey, was arrested on Friday evening while making his way to the Institute of Contemporary Art. He was due to perform as a deejay at his first solo exhibition.
Fairey was accused of tagging property with graffiti on two occasions. The graffiti in question was apparently based on the Andre the Giant street art action that he was known for in his early career.
Fairey, 38, who is from Los Angeles, is to be arraigned on Monday in Brighton District Court. This according to Jake Wark, spokesperson for the Suffolk District Attorney.
It is not the first time Fairey has been arrested. He was arrested many times before for drawing on private property and buildings without permission.
The ICA praised Fairey for his contribution to art and to popular thinking about art and its role in society. The Institute said they were enthusiastic to be working with the artist and happy to be showing his first museum retrospective of his art.
