It was Geeks Single Night Friday at Brave New World Comics in Newhall, north of Los Angeles, where elite geeks were invited to freely meet, greet and gawk at the array of comic books, stocked book shelves and posters that adorn its walls.
Hosted by Brave New World’s owners, Atom and Portlyn Freeman, the event welcomed geeks of all stripes to their establishment.
It’s an eclectic bunch, indeed that meets at
Brave New World. Evenings can begin like a lot of social events where virtual strangers meet, with the guys lined up on one side of the room, with the gals on the other side giving them furtive glances.
Eventually they begin to mingle, and comments like “my dad looks like the Hulk”; or the gal who said, “ A guy who knows less about comics than you do, that's a total turnoff, that's like he's more of a girl than you are”; or the guy who said he just wants to meet a girl who won’t want to change him, just like he wouldn’t want to change her."
Eclectic, people of varied interests, some of who march to their own computerized drummers, this why the Freeman started the single’s night.
"These guys and gals need all the help they can get," said Portlyn, a self-confessed geek, and that is what she and her husband are all about.
Geeky guests were invited to share their nerdy interests in a host of things, including gaming, coding, theatre, bands, computers or just meet “
socially stunted” regular old geeks, proving that there is something and a place for everyone, especially in L.A.
