article imageTom Cruise speaks Spanish to Portuguese-speaking Brazilians

By Chris V. Thangham     Feb 7, 2009 in Entertainment
Actor Tom Cruise is promoting the movie Valkyrie in Brazil. While trying to charm the audience, Cruise spoke in Spanish. The effect was lost on the audience because Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish.
Cruise was visiting Brazil to promote his movie Valkyrie. To impress the audience, he wanted to speak in their native language; he spoke to them in Spanish and said “hola” (hello) and “gracias” (thank you).
Even though many Brazilians understand Spanish, the official language in that country is Portuguese. “Obrigado” is Portuguese for thanks and “ola” means hello.
Former U.S. President, George W. Bush made a similar mistake when he yelled “Amigo, Amigo” to the Italian-speaking Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi. In Italian, friend is "Amico."
