In a riveting Ontario Hockey League game, the visiting Kingston Frontenacs lost in overtime to the powerhouse Brampton Battalion.
Less than a week after upsetting John Tavares and the London Knights, coach Doug Gilmour's lowly Kingston Frontenacs nearly embarrassed the red-hot Brampton Battalion in front of a lively crowd, but ended up falling 4-3 in overtime. The Frontenacs found themselves up 3-2 late in the third period, but Jason Dale's second goal of the night with under eight minutes to go evened the score and sent the game to sudden death.
Vancouver Canucks prospect Cody Hodgson, quiet most of the night, nearly ended it early in the extra frame on a shorthanded breakaway, but Kingston goalie John Cullen turned him away with the glove for one of his 35 saves, many of them difficult. However, with just 30 seconds to go, the highly touted Matt Duchene put it away when he one-timed a beautiful setup from New York Rangers prospect Evgeni Grachev past a helpless Cullen.
After a scoreless opening frame, Brampton opened the scoring early in the second period on Jason Dale's 14th of the season and first of two on the night. The Frontenacs tied it up on a goal by Nathan Moon with less than two minutes to go, only to give up the lead and then draw even again on another goal by Moon, his 19th, with only 29 seconds left before the second intermission.
Backup goalie Patrick Killeen, a Pittsburgh Penguins 2008 draft pick, got the start for Brampton and looked shaky at times, but was impressive in the dying minutes of regulation. He made 28 saves for the win.
Doug Gilmour, after being honoured by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, received a warm ovation from the crowd. He signed autographs from the Kingston bench before the start of each period.
