A truck crashed, spilling oil that burst into flames the central Rift Valley town of Molo, the resuling death toll stands at 111 people.
The death toll from a fire after an oil spill in central Kenya has risen to 111. This is one of the African nation's worst disasters of recent times.
The truck was travelling near the central Rift Valley town of Molo on Saturday when it
crashed and spilled oil . Hundreds were gathered around the truck trying to recover the fuel when the oil burst into flames.
"We counted 91 bodies at the site and there were 20 others that had been taken to the local mortuary," said Rift Valley police provincial commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan.
It is possible, so rescuers say, someone may have accidentally dropped a cigarette, although there was also suspicion such as act was intentional.
"After the lorry overturned and it spilled a lot of petrol, hundreds of residents from the area, and motorcycle riders, came to try and get free fuel," said Hassan.
"Then it seems somebody lit a cigarette, causing the fire. Or someone who was stopped from getting close by the police started the fire on purpose."
