By Richard James.
A newspaper in Mexico intends to make the national football team win a match against the United States by using the power of voodoo.
There are vouchers in the paper with which readers can get their own voodoo doll, dressed up in the American football strip.
The voodoo dolls were going to be available from Radio Shack. They, now, have withdrawn from the promotion saying they couldn’t support an action directed against the US national team.
The newspaper is now searching for an alternative outlet.
On the 11th of February, Mexico will play a qualifier for the World Championships of 2010 against the team from the United States.
Mexico has not been able to win against the US since the year 2000.
The newspaper in question has announced to offer voodoo dolls representing some other opponents.
The so-called ‘secret weapon’ will be deployed against Costa Rica, Honduras, and El Salvador as well.
It is an interesting culture that seeks to employ such colourful, if nefarious, practices in order to win a football match. I have seen Mexico play very well at several big football tournaments.
Perhaps the team will add a witch doctor to the medical staff.
