A German-owned tanker that was carrying liquefied petroleum gas in the Gulf of Aden was hijacked by Somali pirates, gunfire exchanged.
The MV Longchamp, a German-owned tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden. This is the third ship to be seized so far this year.
"The MV Longchamp was hijacked this morning with a crew of 13 Filipinos and one Indonesian," said Andrew Mwangura, of the East African Seafarers Assistance Programme.
"There was a heavy exchange of gunfire (but) the crew is believed to be safe."
It was unclear whether the exchange was between different groups of hijackers or with foreign navies patrolling the pirate-infested waters.
The Longchamps was transporting liquefied petroleum gas "from Europe to the Far East," , however, exact locations were not provided.
